Welcome Home, Gymnocalycium Blooms on the Patio
40×60 oil on canvas
There are special places out in the world, and then there is home. If we are fortunate, home is a special place too. I love my adventures, but am so thankful to have a soft place to land when my wheels roll to a stop. In the past few years, home has taken on new meaning. It is our dwelling, our workplace, our children’s school, our restaurant, our movie theater, our botanical garden.
A friend gave me this gymnocalycium cactus plant for my birthday a few years ago. Through extreme heat and record rains, it has continued to bloom. On some of my worst days, I have wandered out into my garden to be greeted by these delicate pale pink and periwinkle blooms in the afternoon sun. The blooms induce a physical and emotional response; my shoulders relax, I breathe deeply and sigh and utter the words aloud, “Welcome Home.”
